General Counsel

The General Counsel Division of the AOC serves the courts by providing administrative legal advice and representation to the AOC and other judicial branch entities, and by regulating court reporters, interpreters, and misdemeanor probation providers. The Legal staff provides general administrative legal representation to judicial branch agencies and oversees a $2,000,000 grant providing legal services to victims of family violence. The Regulatory staff provides administrative support to the Board of Court Reporting of the Judicial Council, the Georgia Commission on Interpreters, and the County and Municipal Probation Advisory Council.

Regulatory Section

Court Reporters
The Board regulates court reporters. It sets testing and continuing education requirements and standards of professional conduct for court reporters. The division serves as the point of contact for individuals interested in working as a certified or registered court reporter. It maintains a database of professional court reporters qualified to work in Georgia courts.

Court Interpreters
The Commission on Interpreters also recruits, trains and licenses interpreters in many languages to meet the needs of the court system. The office lists registered or certified court interpreters by county, language and contact information on the AOC website, www.georgiacourts.org , or a dedicated hotline, (404) 463-6478. The division also sets guidelines for the use of interpreters in the courts and establishes rules of Ethical Standards and Professional Responsibility for Interpreters.

County and Municipal Probation Advisory Council
The AOC provides administrative support to the County and Municipal Probation Advisory Council which regulates all misdemeanor probation entities in Georgia. Both private probation entities and governmental (city and county) probation entities provide supervision, counseling, and collection of court-ordered fines to courts for individuals convicted of misdemeanor offenses. These entities provide services to approximately 700 courts in Georgia and supervise over 300,000 offenders annually.
